PHILADELPHIA Philly is the second largest city on the East Coast, and ranks fifth in the nation, with a population of 5.8 million people. CENTER CITY - DOWNTOWN Communities which make up the area which is considered "Center City" in the downtown include: Avenue of the Arts, Callowhill, Chinatown, Elfreth's Alley, Filter Square, Franklintown, Logan Square, Markey East, Old City, Penn Center, Penn's Landing, Delaware Riverfront, Rittenhose Square, Society Hill, South Street, Washington Square West, and Gayborhood. The Center City and Downtown area is the professional and business hamlet of the entire city. Apartment living, either as rental units, or by purchase, are the most typical form of dwelling in this popular section of Philadelphia. Professionals, and families both inhabit the area, with many residents and visitors converging on the area to enjoy the entertainment, and shopping, and special events routinely hosted in the area. Avenue of the Arts - The lively section of downtown is located on a portion of Broad Street, where art galleries, museums, and theaters are found in abundance. The stretch of culturally offerings run all the way to Temple University on Washington Avenue. Also located along the avenue are: Kimmel Center, Merriam Theatre, Wilma Theatre, Academy of Music, Rittenhouse Square, University of the Arts, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The Avenue, and Rittenhouse Square are known as the most affluent sections of the city. A hub of business and special events can be found in the downtown area at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The large building offers 1.3 million square feet of open floor space, and is connected to the Marriott Hotel. Also, the convention center is the only one in the nation to have a certified historic grand hall, which is over 100 years old, called the "Train Shed", which is located inside the main entrance. The center, which opened in 19393 has also received multiple honors and awards for the atmosphere and architecture. Chinatown - This section spans from Arch to Vine Streets, and also from 8th to 11th Streets, and while a residential area, primarily functions as a popular tourist destination, a trade center, and venue of some of the finest ethnic restaurants and bakeries Philly has to offer. It is also typically considered the heart of the Asian culture in the Delaware Valley metropolitan area. While the nearly 1000 residents are of mostly Chinese a growing number of residents are also: Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Cambodian. Also a new section of the Asian neighborhood is growing in Southern Philadelphia, and is known to be a Vietnamese community. Attractions in this section also include: China Gate, and the famous, "Friendship Arch" shaped top ornately form a heart. Old City is located in the near the Delaware River where founders William Penn and the Quakers first settled. Many visitors travel to this area to see the site of Elfreth's Alley, the Betsy Ross House. This section covers several blocks between Front and Sixth Streets, and also by Vine Street to the north and Walnut Street to the south. This neighborhood is becoming a popular place to socialize for young free thinking adults, sometimes called the "bohemian hangout". The Girard Fountain Park, and Independence National Park are also popular places for visiting, and recreational experiences in this section of the city. Society Hill is a very low crime, and quiet section of the downtown area. Dwellings are primarily rowhouses, designed in both the Georgian and Federal styles. This neighborhood is located in the Walnut, South, Front, and 8th Street areas. Market East is located along Market Street between Arch Street to the north, Chestnut Street to the south, Juniper Street to the west, and 6th Street. This area serves as the largest shopping and retail center in the city, at Independence Hall, and is near the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Penn Center is often referred to as the heart of Philadelphia's Central Business District, and is located north of Rittenhouse Square, west of Chinatown, south of Spring Garden, and east of the Schuylkill River. The station houses many office buildings such as Mellon Bank Center and Five Penn Center. Washington Square West is located between 7th and Broad Streets and between Walnut and South Streets, Chinatown, Society Hill, Bella Vista and Hawthorne, and is also near the popular areas of the Avenue of the Arts and Rittenhouse Square. The area is primarily consisting of three and four story rowhouses, with elevator accessible apartments and offices with ground-floor retail intermingled among the older historic rowhouses. The area offers specialty shops, and is located near Penn's Landing to about 10th Street, with many opportunities to hear live music, including the Theater of the Living Arts. Hog Island is located along the Delaware River, and known s the origin of the Hoagie sandwich. Italian Americans are the primary residents of this area. Eastwick is the bordered by the Philadelphia International Airport and the city line with Delaware County, Pennsylvania at Cobbs Creek and Darby Creek. Elmwood Park is located adjacent to this more rural area of the city. Most of the housing was built before the 1950's and is referred to it as "The Meadows." Nearby creeks offer recreational opportunities in the areas of swimming, bathing, and fishing. An extensive crabbing home industry is also based in this section of the city. The Packer Park community includes over one thousand homes centered in two unique builder developments. The section is one of four residential communities which make up the special Sports Complex District. The neighborhood boundaries consist of Packer Avenue to the north, Hartranft Street to the south, Broad Street to the east, and 20th Street to the west. The community is also the home of one of the most recognized, and organized community groups in the south section of Philadelphia. The area known as the "Reserve" is directly across from Packer Park, and is a modern hosing development, that has recently increased in both size, and popularity. WEST Communities which in West Philly include: Belmont, Carroll Park, Cathedral Park, Cobbs Creek, Dunlap, Haddington, Haverford North, Mantua, Mill Creek, Overbrook, Overbrook Park, Overbrook Farms, Parkside, Saunders Park, Wynnfield, Fairmount Park, University City, Black Bottom, Cedar Park, Garden Court, Powelton Village, Spruce Hill, Squirrel Hill, Walnut Hill, Woodland Terrace, and Wynnfield Heights, Walnut Hill is a social center in the western section of Philadelphia, and boasts the largest number of restaurants, coffee house, nightclubs, and cinemas in this section of the city. Primary student, and staff housing can be found in the following areas of West Philadelphia. The area basically surrounds the University of Pennsylvania. And runs East to the Schuylkill River and Interstate 76 i.e. the Schuylkill Expressway, North to Market St. and Powelton Ave., South to the Schuylkill river and the Media line railroad and to the West to around 52th Street: Black Bottom around the area of 38th and Market. Cedar Park - North to Larchwood Ave., South to Baltimore Ave., East to 46th St., West to 52nd Street, Garden Court - North to Locust St., South to Cedar Ave., East to 46th St., West to 52nd Street, Powelton Village - North to Spring Garden St., South to Market St., East to 32nd St., West to 44th Street, Spruce Hill - North to Market, South to Baltimore Ave., East to 40th, West to around 46th Street, Squirrel Hill - North to Baltimore Ave., South to Woodland Ave., East to 45rd St., West to 50th Street Walnut Hill - North to Market St., South to Larchwood Ave., East to 46th St., West to 52nd Street, and Woodland Terrace - North to Baltimore Ave., South to Woodland Ave., East to 40th St., West to 43rd Street. Cobbs Creek is primarily an African American neighborhood the Creek is generally considered to be located within the Market Street and Baltimore Avenue area. The section is often referred by locals as "The Southside", in reference to its location to the south of Market Street and the distinct neighborhood frequented local street gangs in decades past. Crime in the area is considered moderate. The local Automobile Suburb Historic District was created, with Cobbs Creek Parkway, Spruce St, 62nd Street, and Angora Street becoming the primary boundaries. Mill Creek is located north of Market Street, south of Girard Avenue, between 44th and 52nd Streets. The area has a higher crime rate than the rest of the west side, and is known or drug trade. Many dwellings in the area are apartments which houses a large number of low income residents, also a growing number of suburban-style low-rise homes have been built in recent years. The Mill Creek area was once the site of an incident, which occurred in 2000, and nicknamed the "Lex Street Massacre". The incident involved a drug dealing dispute which resulted in at least seven deaths and three wounded, and is still regarded as the worst killing spree in Philadelphia's history. Wynnefield Heights is a the most popular middle class neighborhood in the greater West Philadelphia section, and is bordered by City Avenue. A local favorite, the Woodside Amusement Park is situated in the area, near the city's Fairmount Park. Wynnefield is the location of the television station, WPVI-TV Channel 6, the City Line shopping center, Holiday Inn, Hilton Hotel, TGI Friday's, Target, the Belmont Reservoir, and the Pennsylvania State Police Barracks, and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, or and serves as the location for the Philadelphia 76ers practice facilities. Wynnefield Heights' borders are Fairmount Park to the east, Belmont Avenue to the west, Edgely Drive to the south, and City Avenue to the north. The neighborhood is almost an equal ratio of African Americans, and white residents, with a very small Hispanic population. West Philly recreational and learning experiences include: Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Education Center, Community Connector, The Enterprise Center, Environmental Background Information Center. Habitat for Humanity, Historic Bartram's Garden, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Historic Calvary United Methodist Church, Afro-Centric back to nature group - MOVE, The Crayola Factory, Concord School House, Atwater Kent Museum, Highlands Mansion and Gardens, Winterthur Museum, PECO Energy Liberty Center, Edgar Allan Poe National Historical Site, Eastern State Penitentiary, Cliveden of the National Trust, and the Fonthill Museum. NORTH Neighborhoods in the North Philly area include: Germantown - Chestnut Hill, Morton, Moint Airy, Wister, West Oak Lane, and Cedarbrook. Roxborough - Andorra, East Falls, Manayunk, Upper Roxborough, and Wissahicken. Near Northeast - Castor Garden, Crescentville, Fox Chase, Frankford, Holme Circle, Holmesburg, Juniata, Lawncrest, Lawndale, Lexington Park, Mayfair, Oxford Circle, Rhawnhurst, Ryers, Tacony, and Wissinoming. Brewerytown runs between the Schuylkill River's eastern bank and 23rd Street, and Parrish Street to the south. The neighborhood was so named because of the numerous breweries that were located along the Schuylkill. The section ins now mostly a residential neighborhood, with a lively commercial sector along Girard Avenue. In spite of a struggle with poverty, the area is seeing growth with a large population of young professional migrating to the neighborhood in recent years. Restaurants in the section include: London Gril, Figs, Trio, Water Works, Osteria, Bishop's Collar, Illuminare Italian, Jack's Firehouse, Bridgid's, and the Rose Tattoo Café. Mayfair is a more suburban section of the city, and offers larger green spaces than anywhere else in Philly. While the area has become more diversified in recent years, the population generally remains Irish in origin, of Asians, Arabs, Blacks and Hispanics in the section. Restaurants in this neighborhood include: Mr. V's Steaks, Country Club, Nifty Fifty's, Blue Ox Bistro, Bralow's Fresh Fish, Gallo's Seafood, Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse, Makiman Sushi, and Gaeta's Italian Bakery. Germantown is often also referred to as "G-Town" and is located approximately about miles northwest from downtown. The neighborhood features many historic buildings, and points of interest, and well as lush, and perfectly landscaped green areas which are open to the public. Thee accepted boundaries of the neighborhood stretch for nearly two miles along Germantown Avenue northwest from Windrim and Roberts Avenues. Next to this area, and very similar in design, and upper middle class and affluent residents, is the neighborhood of Mount Airy. North Philly historic landmarks and points of interest include: Deshler-Morris House, Grumblethorpe, Battle of Germantown site , John Johnson House, Upsala, Winston Commons, Wyck House, Clividen, the estate of Benjamin Chew, Germantown Cricket Club, Rittenhouse Town, Stenton, Concord School, Alden Park, Barron House, Concord School, Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion and The Grange Estate, Gilbert Stuart Studio, Green Tree Tavern , Lower Burial Ground of Hood Cemetery, Vernon Park, Mennonite Meetinghouse, Loudoun, Strawberry Mansion neighborhood, and The Connie Mack House. Manayunk is located only a few minutes away from Center City Philadelphia, and is situated along the banks of the Schuylkill River and the Manayunk Canal. Main Street runs through the middle of a very unique shopping and dining section of the city. Manayunk boasts over 75 high end boutiques and galleries, with an additional 30 restaurants and eateries in the community.
